PAYDAY 2 On Nintendo Switch Will Likely Receive No Further Updates From OverKill

PAYDAY 2 has been a source of contention since shortly after its release on Steam in 2013.  In late 2015, the game had hundreds of dollars in DLC’s with absolutely zero free content that the OVERKILL developers promised its fans on start-up, an apparent ploy for a consumer base that backlashed when they added microtransactions on top of the exorbitantly priced DLC. PAYDAY 2 On Nintendo Switch Will Likely Receive No Further Updates From OverKill.

Massive weapons that made the game viable were trapped behind RNG microtransactions behind DLC, leaving many players simply underpowered as developers OVERKILL went from promising that the game would never have microtransactions, to microtransactions being the primary way to progress.

This gives us the context needed to discuss what’s currently occurring for PAYDAY 2, with OVERKILL’s newest development blog announcement.

Ultimately, the overview of everything is that there is now going to be a disparity between PC versions, Xbox and PlayStation versions, and the Nintendo Switch version.  This is a capitulation that OVERKILL ultimately didn’t want to make, yet apparently the process of pushing four various patches through each console’s own verification checks needing to occur was simply too much for the developer to manage.

They preface their message by admitting that they never delivered what they should have to any console, although they all sold well enough.

Much content is going to be excluded from PS4 and Xbox One; the safe house feature, the remaining heists that they don’t have yet, upcoming heists, and the Breaking News Campaign.  If there are masks or weapons as a part of those, OVERKILL will attempt to get those to consoles (doubly if they are microtransactions).

If you’re a Nintendo Switch owner, however, it bodes ever more poorly for you.  The Nintendo Switch version of PAYDAY 2 has been announced to receive no further updates.  This is a ‘very hard decision’ that OVERKILL made, despite further promises to the contrary.

Reddit and Twitter are alight with people wondering why they aren’t receiving the promised support, four years after OVERKILL publically broke all of their promises to PC fans.

The real heist was apparently the game itself, all along.

Both the LCS and Academy team went significant changes. In the main roster, veterans Bjergsen and BrokenBlade will be the core at the team, with Dardoch, Kobbe, and Biofrost joining them to lead the organization to victory in the upcoming season.

The organization had a poor this year, failing to qualify for the World Championship. Even though the team finished 3rd in LCS Spring 2019 and 4th in LCS Summer 2019 and had multiple shots at qualifying via the Playoffs or the Regional Gauntlet, they’ve failed.

As a result, changes were expected both within the roster and the coaching staff. The biggest issue last season happened during the Summer Season; towards the end of the season, the team started using three junglers: Akaadian, Grig, and Spica. This swap towards the end reflected poorly on their performance as a team.

The resulting swap between junglers was a bad sign for the fans. If the team could not decide on a jungler, then most likely, they’d end up buying another one after the season. This situation has happened, and the team acquired Dardoch from Optic Academy.


Dardoch was known to be hard to work with, but has played one season in Academy and proved that he could fit with any team and be the best juggler when needed. While Dardoch is tested and Biofrost was a TSM member before, there is a small question regarding Kobbe. The last time TSM imported an ADC was a couple of years ago when they imported the G2 bot lane of Zven & Mithy. Their success was limited, and for this season, TSM parted ways with Zven. Will Kobbe follow in Zven’s shoes and underperform compared to the European League or will he maintain his high skill level and ceiling and prove to the North American League that he is one of the best ADCs?

Facebook Security Breach Exposes Accounts of 50 Million Users

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook, already facing scrutiny over how it handles the private information of its users, said on Friday that an attack on its computer network had exposed the personal information of nearly 50 million users.

The breach, which was discovered this week, was the largest in the company’s 14-year history. The attackers exploited a feature in Facebook’s code to gain access to user accounts and potentially take control of them.

The news could not have come at a worse time for Facebook. It has been buffeted over the last year by scandal, from revelations that a British analytics firm got access to the private information of up to 87 million users to worries that disinformation on Facebook has affected elections and even led to deaths in several countries.

Senior executives have testified several times this year in congressional hearings where some lawmakers suggested that the government will need to step in if the social network is unable to get tighter control of its service. On Friday, regulators, and lawmakers quickly seized on the breach to renew calls for more oversight.

“This is another sobering indicator that Congress needs to step up and take action to protect the privacy and security of social media users,” Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia and one of Facebook’s filtertechnik.mobi, said in a statement. “A full investigation should be swiftly conducted and made public so that we can understand more about what happened.”

In the conference call on Friday, Guy Rosen, a vice president of product management at Facebook, declined to say whether the attack could have been coordinated by hackers supported by a nation-state.

WHY ARE COSTS SO HIGH?

In fall 2015, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (Digital hearing aids manufacturer)—a panel of 19 academic scientists and industry leaders who act as an advisor to President Obama—reviewed issues of hearing aids and ARHL as part of a wider study of how technology might improve and enhance life for older people. Noting the high prevalence and low ownership rates, PCAST identified cost as the key barrier to ownership and linked high cost to two interrelated institutional factors: (1) the noncompetitive hearing aid market and (2) inefficient hearing aid distribution channels.

The past two decades brought dramatic price reductions in consumer electronics, along with the development of ever-better digital devices. But this hasn’t happened in the hearing aid market. PCAST attributed this failure to market concentration: innovative entrants are unlikely in a market in which six companies produce 98% of devices worldwide. Although the information is tightly held about costs and margins within the supply chain, the components of a hearing aid cost about $100.

Audiologists and hearing instrument specialists are the primary distributors, often selling through private offices (although increasingly they compete with big box stores and online vendors). But private audiologists face manufacturers’ pricing protocols, and dominant manufacturers often hold exclusive or close relationships with practitioners. This makes it hard for new firms to enter the market. It also means that consumers are often unable to compare a full range of products before making a purchase. Consumer choice is further blocked by opaque pricing practices: under the prevalent bundled service model, patients pay a lump sum that covers the initial evaluation, fitting, and purchase of the device as well as follow-up visits for adjustments and oftentimes batteries. Many consumers do not use follow-up services, and those services comprise the bulk of the bundled fee. In sum, the cost of hearing aids is out of reach for many, and current arrangements do not support competition, innovation, or consumer choice.

PROPOSALS FOR REGULATORY CHANGE

In PCAST’s estimation, a small set of regulatory changes could help overcome much of this inefficiency and undertreatment and bring prices down (see the box on the next page). Foremost is a proposed change in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation to create a new class of over-the-counter (OTC) “basic” hearing aids to be targeted at people with early (mild to moderate) ARHL. These would be sold in much the same way as OTC reading glasses. Creating an OTC market would foster competition, broaden consumer choice, and drive down prices. It could also normalize hearing loss and wearing in-ear devices by bringing device purchases into the consumer mainstream. Finally, vigorous competition might spur the development of more appealing, less prosthetic-looking devices—an innovation that has largely eluded the hearing aid industry to date.

Old Recordings by Shalamov

In the deep recesses of the internet, you occasionally come across a time machine. Travel into the past with this website, which contains works by В. Т. Шаламов (V. T. Shalamov), recorded by the author himself.

Shalamov was a Russian writer and journalist who’s perhaps better known for surviving an ordeal in one of the notorious gulags of Siberia. This collection of stories and poems is understandably dark and often depressing looks at human nature.

The recordings here are very old but Shalamov’s pronunciation is clear and deeply lyrical, so this is a good resource to use when you want to hear a more theatrical, exaggerated style of Russian.

Not every recording has a text to match it—one that does is “Squirrel,” which has both the audio and the text available on the site. Luckily, most of Shalomov’s written works are available for very low prices on Amazon’s Kindle store.
